8th Grade - Line Graphs and Scatter Plots

Scatter plots are similar to line graphs in that data points are plotted on horizontal and vertical axes. The difference is that with a scatter plot, the plotted data points are not connected together with line segments.

Statistic analysts often use scatter plots to determine if there is a relationship, or correlation, between the two variables.

We draw a line of best fit in a scatter plot to analyze the correlation.
If the slope of the line is positive, then the variables are said to have a positive correlation. If the slope of the line is negative, the variables have a negative correlation.
