In this first trimester, you will be reading articles,
talking to friends and family, and watching the news to learn more about the
scientific world around you. You will choose a current issue and do a ton of
research to try to solve a problem that is affecting you, your community,
country or world. Below is a list of 10 possible problems. However, if there is
another issue you would like to research, you can come talk to me, and we can
iron out the details.
Your final paper will be an 6 to 8 page document. It will
give readers a thorough background on your topic, help them understand what the
problem is, why it is important and what you propose as a solution. The
document will be broken up into various sub-topics so that your reader gets a
clear and comprehensive understanding of your work.
This paper will also be the groundwork for your Science Expo
projects, so be prepared to present your research and findings!
10 Current
Environmental Problems
How can we prevent further health problems by reducing pollution?
How can we revive the world’s oceans?
How can we curb global warming?
How can we prevent natural resource depletion and create
clean energy for the future?
How will we defend endangered species and prevent further extinctions?
How will we ensure safe and sufficient water supply?
How will we build sustainable communities? And implement
“green building”?
How can we better the waste disposal systems?
How can we revive the world’s forests?
How can we better genetic engineering so that it is not so
harmful to the environment?
To help you understand what subtopics are, take a look at
this website:
Before you start writing, you will create an outline and
bibliography, which will include all of your subtopics (minimum of 6) and a
list of the sources you will use in proper format (you will be using
EasyBib). Once you begin writing, you
will hand in one page of your paper at the end of each week. You will have a
chance to edit the entire document at the end of the trimester before handing
in your final draft.
Homework: Spend some time researching environmental issues and think about which ones are important to you. Start narrowing down your choices.
